The dark, mysterious bad dude (this one creates weapons in shop class) turns out to be a nice guy after all. Sex is the major topic of all discussions, including comparison of anatomical sizes and, in this film, a suggestion of bestiality.Ĩ) The seemingly nice guy that dad wants you to date turns out to be a jerk. Heath Ledger, Joseph Gordon-Leavitt, David Krumholtz and the not my favorite Julia Stiles all work together fairly seamlessly to provide a teen film experience on the level of Fast Times at Ridgemont High with Shakespeare. Virginity is a plague that must be eliminated before graduation. The “importants” wear designer gear and female importants must bare their navels (and, in this movie, other body parts) frequently.Ħ) All efforts to discourage teens from using alcohol and drugs are flushed down the pipe.ħ) You date to have sex. This film looks to Shakespeare’s Taming of the Shrew for its original conception, appealing to desperate English teachers trying to convince teens that the Bard is okay.Ĥ) Parents are reactionary and their attempts to be “cool” while communicating with their children will end in comical failure.ĥ) Rich teens are important teens, otherwise, you’re an extra hanging around in the background like wallpaper. (Yes, yes, we’re all super old.) It also changed my life. Our review: Parents say ( 26 ): Kids say ( 96 ): The movie benefits from appealing performers and some genuinely fresh and funny dialogue. Written by Karen McCullah and Kirsten Smith, it follows Cameron (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) and Patrick (Heath Ledger), two unlikely friends who team up to date sisters Kat (Julia Stiles) and Bianca (Larisa Oleynik) Stratford. A reimagining of Shakespeare’s The Taming of the Shrew, but set in high school (because it was 1999), it opened at 2 in the US, just behind The Matrix. The 10 Things I Hate About You, directed by Gil Junger, is a romantic comedy that has withstood the test of time effortlessly. Smart, sharp dialogue may not be the foundation of a good movie, but it certainly is a key. Kat has all of the best lines, and Stiles utters them with relish. In fact, theyre so thick that I was surprised the film got away with a PG-13 rating. 3) Plots are oh-so-loosely based on classic literature. Twenty years ago this week, 10 Things I Hate About You hit the big screen. The dialogue in 10 Things I Hate About You is peppered with sexual references and double entendres.
